Shrimp Noodle Order Options
Ivan’s Favorite Kaya Toast Location

There are many different breakfasts to eat in Singapore and most of them are interesting…  Here are a few we tried this time:

Kaya Toast

  1.  Soft boiled Eggs and Kaya toast:  Kaya toast is toasted bread which sandwiches butter slices and a jam made with coconut and eggs.  This is then paired with soft boiled eggs.  Coffee or tea completes the breakfast.
  2. Shrimp Noodles or Shrimp and Pork Rib Noodles:  A nice thick broth is paired with Singaporean egg noodles and then either halved prawns or halved prawns and pork ribs.  You can also complete this with a bit of delicacies like scallion pancakes.  Once again, coffee or tea finishes this off.
  3. Pak Kut Teh:  This is a pork broth served with whatever pork you would like. This can range from the pigs tail, gizzard, liver to tenderloin or ribs.  The TEH part means tea so this is eaten with tea. What is really interesting is that once you order, a lady comes around and fills your bowl with more broth so you can have as much broth as you would like.
  4. Carrot Cake:  This savory carrot cake has no carrot, at least not of the orange variety. Instead, the core ingredients of the cake are rice flour and white radish which some call white carrot. The mixture is steamed, then cut into cubes and fried with garlic, eggs and preserved radish called ‘chai poh’. You can get it “white” or “black”.  The black one is fried with black soy sauce.
  5. Dim Sum:  While not really a breakfast food since this isn’t eaten before 10 am, it is considered a food eaten for breakfast. We had dim sum while in Singapore but at night.
  6. Things I didn’t eat:  Roti prata (pancake eaten with curry or beans), congee (porridge), fish soup or pigs stomach.  Just not enough time for it all….
