Peranakan Dinner in Singapore
Mimi Sheraton had taught me a new work “Peranakan”. I had called this group of people “Straits Chinese” meaning they were from the straits or Malaysian/Singaporean. Wikipedia lists both so I guess I am still ok… Mimi lists their food as an interesting blend of Chinese/Malay/British and Indian which is really want embodies the Singaporean Culture. The food from this region is stupendous and when Elena asked what we would do in Singapore I said “EAT”. Upon landing, we headed to a famous Hawker Center and had anchovy fried rice, Singaporean noodles with shrimp, chicken satay with peanut sauce, barbecued stingray and water spinach. Yum. This was only meal #1. My advice is that when in Singapore you eat. All the time. As often as you can without making yourself physically sick. I mentioned we ate a Hawker Center. This is a version of a food court but a food court on steroids. There are hundreds of stalls all specializing in a few things. You find a table, order and they bring the food to your table. These places are packed with families, work colleagues and tourists all getting some of the best food of their lives for bargain prices. We also went another day and had laksa( a spicy coconut stew with noodles and cockles)/oyster omelette (which is another of the 1000 things) and my personal favorites: black pepper crab/chili crab but I posted on those already… You ask any cab driver and he will tell you his or her favorite restaurant, favorite hawker center and favorite stall in that hawker center. Every single person living in Singapore is a foodie…
