Sundance Film Festival, Honey Boy (the movie) and Kolaches
It has been another amazing year going to the Sundance Film Festival. This year I spent a day in Park City which was really fun (and hectic), I saw the Apollo 11 re-film which was very amazing, and I saw what must be the movie of the year, Honey Boy. A food blog will not need to blog about Honey Boy as it will get plenty said about it by the movie blogs but while difficult to watch, Honey Boy was as an amazing of a movie as they come. Truly well acted, well filmed and incredibly honest. Shia Lebouf, is gifted beyond belief and after writing this masterpiece, plays his own abusive father. Please see Honey Boy.
But no trip to Utah (or anywhere) is complete without eating and this year I tried Czech Kolaches at Kruska’s Kolaches (there is one in Salt Lake and one in Provo). A kolache looks a bit like either a round ball of dough or simple danish but the line out the door and fact that people were buying them in huge boxes begs to differ. First of all the dough is so soft and sublet-think the best soft roll you have ever had, and the fillings so creative. I had one of the raspberry open kolaches and one of the chicken-cilantro omelette ones that were round. They come piping hot and so soft and pliable.
You imagine fresh dough baking and them just coming out of the oven-oh yeah, that is exactly what is happening. The staff were baking the kolaches right in front of us and selling them as fast as they could make them. They also say they are open 6:30 am until they run out. That is a fabulous business model and let’s you know that they will run out. They will bake and bake and yet not be able to keep up with demand. I suspect people come for the taste and for the smell. Is there really anything better than ovens full of the fresh baking dough smell? Is there a better smell? I think not. Luckily, the taste is pretty darn good as well.
