Portuguese Cheese
You can’t make everyone happy. You’re not cheese.

It has been quite a bit of time since I posted about cheese. I do admit that I have been distracted by dumplings and by soup. That being said, it was only a matter of time since I came back to cheese and in this case, Portuguese cheese.
I’ve had two great shots at eating Portuguese cheese. In 2007 Michelle, Kristen & I took a trip to Lisbon and surrounding areas. I remember so many things from that trip but one of my favorite things was the cheese. We bought cheese every day of every type-buying based on what looked good. Realistically, every single round was better than the last. We even brought cheese onto the plane to eat on the way home.
In 2016 when Elena, Shelley and I went to the Azores, one of my hopes was that there would be cheese, and there was! While it is hard to find Portuguese at the regular grocery store, I have found a variety at specialty stores such as Venissimo and shipped on line and took it to the Sunday 3 pm friend group at Wild Barrel. . I do think that the cheese from Portugal is not well known but absolutely worth the effort to get to know. My favorite Serra da Estrala which is a gooey cheese you eat with a spoon (or spoon out with bread). Hard to tell but it is the round cheese on the left above. Yum.
