Amish Apple Dumplings
CNN’s list of 30 dumplings from around the world that you should eat lists Amish Apple Dumplings as #28. My mom made apple dumplings and I posted her recipe in 2018. Still, I had to see if CNN had an in to even better dumplings so while in Philadelphia, my niece took me to the Dutch Eating Place store to get traditional apple dumplings. They were good but they have nothing on my mom’s version…. I am posting hers again, just for good measure.
Apple Dumplings
Ingredients:
Dough for an 8 inch pastry crust
1 ½ cup sugar
1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Pieces of butter
6 apples
Sauce:
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 cups water
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
Preparation:
Roll out the 8 inch pastry. Cut into 6 pieces. Core and peel each apple. Place in the center of each pastry piece. Fill each apple with the combined 1 ½ c sugar and 1 ½ t cinnamon. Place a small pat of butter in each apple. Gently gather the corners of the pastry to the center. Place in an open baking dish, allowing room around each apple. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine the ingredients for the sauce. Boil 3 minutes and then pour over the apples. Bake at 425 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
