Hot Crossed Buns

One of the foods that are supposed to be an Easter food are hot crossed buns so Elena and I drove this am to Prager brothers in Carlsbad and fetched some Easter hot crossed buns. As per the internet, they are to be eaten on Good Friday after lent ends and the spices are those that were used to embalm Jesus’s body. I am not sure how I feel about that image but I do think the buns are nice.  Like a big soft bun filled with small currents and toped with a sugar cross.  The myth is that they were invented by a monk in the 12th century. While this is not true, there is a record of them from the 16th century so these have been around for a long time. Why did I go to Carlsbad for these? They are readily avaialbe but I had heard about Prager Brothers and this is one of their speciaties. If you have not been, they have a little store front and during the time of the plague, you can pre-order and pick up in your car. In addition to the hot crossed buns we bought a polenta bread and fig dessert squares. I do need to put in a plug for these guys. They make so really yummy things.
