Eating Food that is not the Color of My Childhood
One of my many fascinations is eating foods that are not the color that correspond with my childhood. When I was growing up, cauliflower was white but now it can be green or purple (or other colors?). Carrots, once only orange are now rainbow. Growing up we had a vegetable garden that was ONE FULL CITY block large and we ate every possible vegetable you could grow in Washington. To this day, I can’t eat zucchini although Jay (my brother) can in bread or fried. I still have PTSD of mom blending (not so well) zucchini up and putting it in things like chocolate cake. Nothing screams chocolate cake quite as much as a big blob of zucchini.
The more colorful the food the better. I try to add color to my diet which means vegetables and fruit. =Misty May-Treanor
Ok, so I digress… I love golden beets and Easter Egg radishes. I posted not too long ago about a bunch of pink berries. While these interesting colors can be found in many places (and I always do a walk around in places like Whole Foods) one of the easiest places to get the different colored goods is from Farm Fresh. I order a box every two weeks and it seems that I can almost always find something of interest. This week I bought golden kiwi and pink lemons. Is it only the color that is different? I do think in some cases this is true but at least for me, golden beets ARE different with a different taste than regular red beets. My purchases this week? Well a golden kiwi tastes more like a lemon and the pink lemons seem like grapefruits. Get yourself some and if you are looking to get really fresh, amazing vegetables, enroll in Farm Fresh to You.
