When an apple a day might keep the doctor away (but require a trip to the dentist): Apple dumplings

With an apple I will astonish Paris.
-Paul Cézanne

We would beg for apple dumplings to be made each time our apple trees were harvested.  Not had one? You don’t know what you are missing.

Ingredients:

Dough for an 8-inch pastry crust

1 ½ cup sugar

1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Pieces of butter

6 apples

Sauce:

1 1/2 cups sugar

3 cups water

4 tablespoons butter

1-teaspoon cinnamon

Preparation:

Roll out the 8-inch pastry.  Cut into 6 pieces.  Core and peel each apple.  Place in the center of each pastry piece.  Fill each apple with the combined 1-½ c sugar and 1 ½ t cinnamon.  Place a small pat of butter in each apple.  Gently gather the corners of the pastry to the center.  Place in an open baking dish, allowing room around each apple.  Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine the ingredients for the sauce.  Boil 3 minutes and then pour over the apples.  Bake at 425 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
