Easy to make sweet little treats: Brigadeiro & Out of the world candy
Elena came home for a few days between her summer internship in Curitiba, Brazil and a 2 week trip to Jerusalem where she will meet with both Palestinian and Israeli leaders. While home, she made us a treat she learned to make in Brazil. I am pretty sure before Elena went to Brazil she hadn’t independently cooked anything and by the time she left Brazil, she was whipping out whole meals and even a brazilian candy called Brigadeiro. Enjoy. Can’t wait to see what she learns on her new trip. I suspect that will be another post for another day. This did remind me of our making a candy that my mom used to make when I was young. i am providing both Elena’s Brazilian Candy recipe as well as the one we made as kids (Out of the World Candy). Both of these are simple treats to make. Both of these recipes provide finished products that are tasty and pretty.
When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

Brigadero
Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons finely grated cocoa powder
1 14 ounce can of condensed milk
½ cup of finely grated coconut sweetened or unsweetened will work
Preparation:
Mix the first three ingredients in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly (approximately 15 minutes) or until the when you stir the spoon leaves an open trail that takes a few minutes to fill in. Now, I am a lazy cook. You will see this in my recipes. I don’t make much of a fuss about things. When I first posted this, I wrote “Place the pan in a refrigerator and cool for one hour”. My good friends Rose and Don wrote me and said they didn’t think many people would want to do that. The messier way is to dump the chocolate on a plate and place in the fridge to cool. I leave this up to you! After the hour is up, Coat hands in butter and roll full teaspoon-sized pieces into balls. Roll in the finely chopped coconut and return to the refrigerator until cooled completely.

- 2 Boxes powdered sugar 16 ounces each
- 2 cubes of butter
- 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups flaked coconut
- 3 cups chopped nuts
- 1 ½ pounds milk chocolate Note, the original recipe calls for a mixture of chocolate and wax for the coating.
Preparation:
Mix all but the chocolate and chill for 45 minutes. Roll the candy in small balls and allow to chill for an additional 15 minutes. Break the milk chocolate into pieces and place in a shallow glass bowl (a pie plate or similar shape). Microwave for 1 minute and stir. Repeat until the chocolate is melted. Stir until the chocolate is lukewarm. Coat each candy ball and place on a wax paper. Let set until firm.
